Do You Want A New Telecommunications Provider
People can choose their telecommunications provider. This is the company supplying the telephone service. It is not the same as the ISP, which is the internet service provider. But there are some companies that offer phone service, internet service, and cable TV service.
This is a Business ADSL package deal that provides cable TV, internet service, and telephone service for a discounted price. But telecommunications refers for the most part to telephone service. But there was a time when people in this country did not have their choice of providers.
One ADSL company controlled most of the communication connections. There were other companies, but only a few companies covered most of the area of the country. A person had to two choices, choose the telephone company that serviced that particular area, or choose not to have a telephone.
The telephone company stifled competition even as technology grew. Some companies were able to offer low long distance rates. But they needed the cooperation of the major phone services in order to connect their systems.
Some companies had the capability to offer lower long distance rates, but they need to have access to connections owned by the major companies. The major companies refused to work with them, and so new and less expensive services were being stifled.
The regulations in place, put in by the government, also helped the large companies keep the new upstarts out of the market. The major phone companies even owned the telephones. People could not buy their a telephone from anyone except an authorized dealer. The phone companies would warn that phone rates would go threw the roof if the regulations were lifted.
However, brave lawyers and strong judges started to rule against the major phone companies. The phone companies warned that deregulation would drive up the prices of phone service. But this did not stop the movement towards deregulation. In the early 1980's, competition was allowed to install service in areas controlled for decades by one company.
It is true that the communications industry is a billion dollar industry and many top executives have gotten wealthy from the need to be able to talk on the telephone. But many believe that deregulation of the market was a positive step. Today people even have the option to use Voip services.
This stands for voice over internet protocol. People can talk for free using their internet connection. This advancement probably would not exist if it were not for the deregulation of the telephone industry.
