Skype’s softphone is a piece of software which runs on your PC that permits you to make a connection to an internet telephony provider and dial a telephone number, just as a normal telephone connects you to your local phone company and permits you to dial a number and speak to a person.

The Skype internet telephony provider provides you with their Skype softphone to download and install. This is the easiest way to work with Skype internet telephony. Use their softphone and you will be up and going in no time.

Because Skype uses its own proprietary internet telephony protocol, you must use the Skype softphone if you are using Skype's service. Because of this fact, you must use Skype’s softphone or you won’t be voice chatting any time soon. Please excuse the pun.
