What Is SkypeOut?
SkypeOut allows you to make a phone call from you Skype softphone on your
computer to anyone with a PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) phone or
also called a POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service) phone. In fact, you can call
cell phones also using SkypeOut. Of course, you can call normal Skpe softphone
users also.
A key point about SkypeOut is that you can make worldwide calls at local
calling rates and you can also make call as you move from location to location.
SkypOut works similar to a calling card. You purchase what is called
calling credit (minutes). Again you have the freedom to call anyone regardless
of their membership with Skype. In other words, it doesn't matter if they have
a Skype account or not.
SkypeOut has a global calling rate for popular destinations worldwide. The rate
changes depending on the destination. See the Skype website for more
information. The most popular destinations include: Argentina (Buenos Aires),
Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Canada (mobiles), Chile, China (Beijing,
Guanzhou, Shanghai, Shenzhen), China (mobiles), Denmark, Estonia, France,
Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Hong Kong (mobiles), Ireland, Italy, Mexico (Mexico
City, Monterrey), Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland (Poland, Gdansk,
Warsaw), Portugal, Russia (Moscow, St. Petersburg), Singapore, Singapore
(mobiles), South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan (Taipei), United
Kingdom and United States (except Alaska and Hawaii). These destinations
cost roughly $.02 per minute.
One very important thing to note is that Skype does not support 911 or
E911. You cannot use Skype for emergency calling.
